Romance in a series

My novel this year is the first of a romantic dark fantasy trilogy. This is the first time I've ever tried writing something where my leads don't get their HEA over the course of one book, and I'm completely lost for how to pace the romance in the first book. Is anyone else taking multiple books to get their protagonists together? And do any of you have recommendations for series that have done so well?
